Smash 137 a streetartist and graffiti writer born in Basel has been influencing the international writer subculture for many years. Smash 137 is obsessed by letters and typographie. Drifted by his possession and love for the western kalligraphie he became one of the most active writers in the world. So his lettering adorns a lot of objects on public spaces – from New York to Moscow.
During the exhibition “Urban Feedbacks” which took place in January of 2008 in Basel, he created an installation, which ironically shows the reality of being a graffiti writer. He fixed more than 2500 sponges on the wall and sprayed his name in black colour on them. On this way he comments the reaction of the angry house owners, who want to remove the “smearing” as soon and as thorough/rigorous as possible. At the same time the sponge can be a symbol of the trancience/eanescece of the piece accompanied with the idea of finiteness.
