Guy Denning "Shooting angels"

April 05, 2015

On 17th of april we open the doors for Guy Denning´s solo show "Shooting angels"

„Urban art is not a new phenomenon. People have been declaring their presence, their humour, their fears and their anger in the streets for as long as there have been streets for it to be seen in. It’s the most democratic form of art; it’s a medium that is available to any that feel the need to use it. With the acceptance and celebration of graffiti culture in the twentieth century it has come to a point where it is now sited behind the streets, in fashionable galleries. Yes, fashions change, but don’t ever think that the graffiti will fade away. That particular writing has always been on the wall.“ - Guy Denning

Guy Denning’s work combines a traditional painterly style with a contemporary, punk-inspired, twist of embedded collaged and stenciled text. This aesthetic, blended with a political narrative, has found Denning a loyal audience in the collectors of urban art.

Guy Denning was born in North Somerset in 1965. He has been obsessed with visual art since childhood and started painting in oils at the age of eleven after receiving a set of old paints from a relative that had grown bored with them. Through the 1980s he was repeatedly unsuccessful in his applications to study painting at degree level but continued painting whilst studying art history with the Open University and learning painting technique from older painters he knew in the west of England. From 1992, he exhibited across Britain. Since 2007 he has also exhibited in the United States of America, Germany, Italy and France. His paintings have been shown in numerous solo and mixed exhibitions. His work is held in several public collections, including the Politics Department of Bristol University, the Political Science Department at Galway University and the MAGI'900 Museum of Contemporary Art, Bologna.

Vernissage 17.4. 19h
Ausstellung 20.4. - 22.5.

Wolfgang Krell - Wummenizer

February 20, 2015

Wolfgang Krell found his passion for spraycans in the graffiti scene of Dortmund already in 1984. From the beginning, he has explored the possibilities of the medium spray paint and presented his work in many group and soloshows i.a. in Carhardt Gallery (Public Provocations), Zurich and London. Willingly crossing limits again and again (The sky is not the limit), Krell decisively influenced the german Street- and Urban Art movement in Germany.

Today he experiments with Stencils and a Mix of spraypaint, acrylics and pencil.
His motives show portraits of women and profiles of pistols and rifles. Though his subjects could not have been more different, Krell finds his own artistic signature to harmoniously combine them.
Tagstyles, known from the Graffiti, and Stencils, as used in Street Art, meet elements of contemporary art in the aesthetic line management of his portraits, in which he drapes the model like in modern Beauty Photography, as well as in the cool shapes of the firearms.

David Stegmann " Station to station"

October 30, 2014

From 31st of October to 28th of November 2014 Pretty Portal shows works of Swiss-German artist David Stegmann aka dust (* 1982, Freiburg). In the exhibition "STATION TO STATION" David Stegmann presents new works on glass and pieces on canvas and paper. Opening reception is on 31st of October 2014 at 7pm.

In his work David Stegmann deals with questions of coexistence of humans and the environment. His works, which combine abstract painting and neosurrealism, are partially apocalyptic and visionary. They provide an insight into a fragile, organic microcosm. In the eye of the beholder concrete and fantastic flows together, to dissolve again in the next moment. Nature, with her absolute passion for perfection, color and shape is the source of David Stegmann's inspiration.

David Stegmann has consistently developed his work. After shows in 2008 and 2009, we are happy to show his latest pieces at Pretty Portal.

Contact us, if you are intereded in the show catalog.

URBSTRACTIONS

July 29, 2014

In September Pretty Portal will show URBSTRACTIONS, an exhibition of different formal and abstract positions. With CHAZME, ETNIK, NEIAS, Pener and Seikon, we are pleased to present a selection of the most interesting and progressive artists of the Urban Abstract and Graffuturism direction.

In their works, compositions of shapes, surfaces and lines dominate. The artists sense the transformation of the urban landscape to the Megalopolis, which they manifest in abstract statements. The results are powerful works, full of rhythm and movement.
The participating artists come from Poland, Italy and Switzerland.
