Graffiti as aesthetics between art and act of willful damage, sign language for the speed and mobility of modern urban Indians - these characterisations of wall art from the spray can are widely known. With his work on canvas, Hendrik “ecb“ Beikirch now shows that rather than following the pathway from the underground into the respectability of art galleries, graffiti is an art of space and its representation.
He does not transfer the sign language itself from walls onto canvas, but rather captures the topographical scenarios in which this language takes place. Stairways, bridges and arcades are the topics of his canvasses, with a wide sky spanning above as a symbol of anarchy and the open space for which the art of graffiti was originally designed. In these imaginary visions, anonymity and secrecy metamorphose to near photographic perfection. A deliberately minimised colour palette and a blending and running of colours evoke the melancholy of a bygone era, reminiscent of images from the early age of photography. Here, graffiti has been transformed into an art of ephemeral beauty.
The silkscreen "Madatoro" from case (ma´claim) is now available at the pretty portal online shop.

The streetartist dust is visiting Pretty Portal in september/october for the second time. At his first Show in febraury this year he showed acrylic paintings on canvas with the title "Enter the funky world“ These paintings gave an insight into a fragile and organic microcosme. Substance and surreal are mixing in front of the viewer to one image, to be desintegrated in the next moment.
Besieds his work on canvas dust is creating sculptures and designtoys. His Designtoy collection, „RAS“ (Radical Action Suite)was released in 2006 and could only be seen on some paintings in the beginning. The figurine RAS was released in spring 2007 in a limited edition and was sold out quick.
The great interest in the RAS motivated dust to produce another small edition( 12 pieces) of the designtoy, to be customized by 12 international artists. These are case(ma´claim/Schmalkalden), Eliot(Berlin), Joey Potts(Chicago), Knix(stuttgart), Magic(D´dorf, Luzern), Miss Nuki(Freiburg), Mr. Slurg(Hamburg), Nychos(Wien), Tasso(ma´claim, Meerane) Tombrane(Freiburg), and Tricky(Paris).
Everyone of these artist created a painting on canvas, that is working together with the customized RAS. Pretty Portal Gallery is happy to present works of so many different artists from the international urban art and streetart scene in one exhibition.
